JOB DESCRIPTION/DUTIES:

Do you love books and have a background in library management? Bonneville Lock and Dam is looking for a volunteer to serve as a project librarian of the Ranger resource library. While our library collection has some organization and a proper database has been formed, we are seeking someone to continue and update the cataloging that was begun by a former Ranger. We are seeking someone to help us refine our library’s purpose and scope and give us a direction on how to develop the library as a current resource. We hope that our volunteer can aid in making proper decisions concerning the library’s contents and assist in implementing changes once we have a proper judgment of its tenacity and range.

If after that initial project is complete, volunteer service can be continued working on additional projects such as historical photograph cataloging, artifact or archive cataloging, improving digital media accessibility.

Volunteers required to pass a federal background investigation to gain access to secure network computers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is indoors and involves periods of time filing, standing, bending, and working at a computer desk. Adjustable-height seating and anti-fatigue floor mats are available.

EXPECTED SCHEDULE: Regular time commitment of at least one day (five to ten consecutive hours) every two weeks. Day(s) and hours will be agreed upon by the volunteer and the coordinator, facility is open 7 days a week. Volunteer must be committed to a regular schedule.

ESTIMATED LENGTH OF COMMITMENT: This posting is for the term of the initial project of updating the library. Volunteering can continue in other capacities related to library management and possibly artifact and archive management or historical research.

COMPENSATION: This position is only suitable for people within commuting distance of Cascade Locks, OR. Volunteers committing to at least eight hours every two weeks are eligible for mileage reimbursement.

QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience/skills in library management
  • Digital data transfer and storage
  • Knowledge of Dewey decimal system
  • Basic computer skills (we use LibraryThing for our catalogue)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Commit to 1 day of volunteering every two weeks minimum

THE SITE:
