Maintenance/Landscaping Volunteer:

Dates: This Position is Year Round 2020

The primary duty of a Maintenance/Landscaping volunteer is to help improve overall park aesthetics by performing /assisting in day to day and seasonal management activities, while promoting native landscape species and helping to fix any problems that arise from minor plumbing issues to basic mechanic work. Volunteers must be willing to work in all weather conditions and have an underlying knowledge of landscape/park maintenance. Key factors to possess will be the methods for pruning, tree care and use of minor chemicals is preferred, but training is available. Volunteers should provide at least 20 hours of service per week and may serve the entire recreation season, based on the needs of each location. The volunteer will work on established weekdays between the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The volunteer may be required to lift up to 40 lbs., walk for extended periods of time, and operate tools such as a weed eater, zero-turn lawn tractor, leaf blower, edger, small hand tools, pruners, pole saw, chain saw, tractor, backpack sprayer, pressure washer, or other tools as required for each job. The proper level of safety equipment must be utilized while operating each specific tool or while working at a job site. All tools will be provided by the agency and volunteers may operate each piece of equipment once the proper level of training and understanding has been established. A volunteer may operate a government vehicle while performing official duties after being trained. The volunteer will need to be trained to use various size trailers for hauling equipment between job sites. A valid driver’s license is required and the driver is responsible for ensuring that their personal insurance will cover any/all expenses acquired in the event of an accident in a government vehicle.

Specific Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Duties will be performed weekdays between 8 am and 4 pm-days will vary as decided by the Volunteer Coordinator/Staff members
     
  • Removing invasive species and unwanted species
     
  • Brush clearing of recreation and prairie restoration areas
     
  • Planting native vegetation and species
     
  • Pesticide/Herbicide application (with proper training)
     
  • Watering plants and tree planting
     
  • Mulching
     
  • General Landscape upkeep (weeding raking, etc…)
     
  • Equipment upkeep (sharpening of blades, oil changes, etc…)
     
  • Plumbing fixture repairs
     
  • Various equipment operations
     
  • Other tasks as assigned by Staff
