About this Opportunity
We have multiple different habitat programs to involve volunteers with.
The first wildlife volunteer opportunity is wood duck box management. We will need people to go out and inspect the boxes we currently have, let us know if any need repaired, repair if willing and able. After the initial inspection the boxes will need to be cleaned of all old material and replenished with new nesting materials. Ideally we would like the boxes to be checked after the fledglings have left the nest to retrieve an egg count for Rangers to put into a data set.
Another wildlife management opportunity we have includes fish habitat placement and installation. We have fish habitat structures that need to be built and strategically placed in the lake bed to provide fish with more cover. The lake also has a Christmas tree collection for people to recycle their Christmas tree for fish habitat in the lake. Volunteers are needed to assist with this process.
Bluebird box management we will need some more mobile to get out on the project and inventory all of our current blue bird houses. Volunteers can also help with box cleaning and egg counts to see how the bluebird population is doing around the lake. Placement of new boxes based on our research in order to increase the number of bluebirds around the lake.
Purple martin lovers! Yough Lake needs you! For years we have tried to encourage a population of purple martins to nest in our purple martin houses with no luck. Come help us come up with a way to get purple martins to stop at Yough and use our houses. Once a population comes in we will need someone to inventory and clean out the houses at the end of nesting season.
